Who We Are
BlumShapiro has long been an active citizen in our community. Our firm is a proud contributor to and sponsor of many Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island charitable, arts and civic organizations and has been selected as 2015 Business Champion for Community Involvement.
Partners and staff donate time serving as board members and in top leadership roles in over 160 organizations including the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, American Red Cross, World Affairs Council, Greater Hartford Arts Council, the South Shore Chamber of Commerce, Connecticut Public Broadcasting, Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, Family Services Woodfield and the University of Rhode Island Foundation.
As a firm, we conduct annual employee fund drives for the United Way and the Greater Hartford Arts Council. These efforts have generated nearly $75,000 in the past two years alone. Other activities we have engaged in include volunteer days for Junior Achievement, The Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity, participation in Big Brothers/Big Sisters during the school year and collections for holiday food and gift drives. Through the BlumShapiro Foundation, we donate approximately $100,000 to worthy organizations annually.
In 2012, BlumShapiro began a partnership with Christian Community Action (CCA) to provide Thanksgiving Day meals to more than 2,300 families and seniors in New Haven. The BlumShapiro Thanksgiving Food Basket Campaign for Christian Community Action is a community wide, hands-on program that collects non-perishable food items and financial contributions, as well as provide volunteers to help bag all donated items for distribution to families and seniors right before Thanksgiving Day.
Junior Achievement (JA) One Day Event is part of BlumShapiro’s ongoing partnership with JA to educate students about financial literacy, careers and entrepreneurism.
For seven consecutive years BlumShapiro volunteers have participated in this event and will use JA’s curriculum which supplement standard social studies curricula that are essential to success in the business world, to teach financial life skill sin multiple classrooms for grades 2 – 5 at Webster Hill School in West Hartford, CT. More than 200 Webster Hill School elementary students will be taught how to deal with difficult decisions about how to best prepare for their educational and professional futures.
BlumShapiro also partners and hosts the JA Career Walk which provides students from Conard High and Hall High schools a look into the real world of business in West Hartford Center. The program seeks to prepare students for the business world, gain a better understanding of jobs in their community and ultimately be successful in the career path that they choose for themselves.
Nearly 30 students divided into groups from the two schools visit a variety of businesses – accounting, banking, finance, marketing, retail, food and beverage and others in West Hartford Center. Each business will provide an overview and tour, and discuss the type of occupations they employ and qualities they look for when hiring people. Each visit will last approximately an hour but a full day of activities is planned for the students!
In 2016, we held our first Softball Showdown to benefit Best Buddies Rhode Island. Best Buddies Rhode Island creates one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The tournament hosts 16 teams which complete for the four coveted four semi-final spots in a day-long softball tournament.
Every Friday, we hold Jeans for Charity Day, focusing our giving over the course of the year to a variety of organizations doing good work in our communities — from food banks to environmental groups.
Previously, BlumShapiro has sponsored the 5k fundraising event at the Travelers Championship with financial support, event organization, race participation and recruitment of volunteers. The family oriented event included a 5K race along the roads that line the fairways and greens of the TPC River Highlands, a Kids Fun Run and many activities for children of all ages. The race benefited local charities.
